RAISE THE GARDEN

Surprise, Joy and Wonder

We intend to capture the experience by filming one-on-one interviews with stakeholders, personal support workers, patients’ families, and residents. The film will document the various stages of development and creative execution of the Raise the Garden art installation project, including its final unveiling and post-evaluation. Through non-intrusive filming practices, we aim to capture the residents’ reactions as they experience the installation—the ways in which the engagement may elicit human flourishing through creative self-expression, social inclusion, sociability, empowerment, and the creation of something of value to self and others.

Why it Matters

Urban density, sprawl, and footprint economization have increased vertical locational planning of long-term care home spaces in Canada. As a result, persons living with dementia find their living space options limited to tall buildings.

The winter months pose specific challenges for mobility, accessibility, and viewing. Furthermore, the distal ‘away from’ and the desire for ‘closer to’ or within natural surroundings may contribute to feelings of disembodiment, emotional detachment, and loneliness.

Residents in long-term care homes need access to garden spaces (seeing, touching, experiencing) to counterbalance living within artificially supported environments.
